AFCI basics: why breakers trip when “nothing changed”

Parallel and series arcs behave differently than overloads. Here’s a plain-language tour for homeowners who keep resetting the same bedroom circuit.

AFCIs exist because damaged cords and loose terminations can arc before they ever pull enough current to heat a standard breaker. That protection is valuable — and occasionally chatty on older wiring mixes.

Before you blame the vacuum

Note which outlets are on the circuit, whether dimmers or smart switches were added, and whether anything new shares neutrals in unexpected ways. Photos of the panel legend help us tremendously before we roll a truck.

When to call

Repeated trips under normal loads deserve investigation — not endless resets. We trace the circuit, verify bonding and neutrals, and recommend targeted repairs instead of band-aids.
