Standby generators: transfer switches, bonding, and clean cutovers

Automatic vs manual transfer, utility separation, and why the panel conversation still drives generator sizing.

A standby generator is only as good as its transfer equipment. The generator makes power; the transfer switch decides — safely and legally — how that power reaches your panel without ever meeting the utility. Get that part wrong and the best case is a failed inspection; the worst case is backfeeding the grid and endangering a line crew working to restore your street.

Optional standby vs. life safety: which rules apply

Residential and most small-commercial standby systems fall under NEC Article 702 (Optional Standby Systems). The stricter Articles 700 and 701 cover legally required emergency and standby systems — egress lighting, fire pumps, healthcare — with tighter transfer-time and testing requirements. It matters because Article 702 gives you flexibility: you can back up the whole service or a selected subset of loads, sized honestly. NEC 702.4 requires the system to handle the load you actually connect — either the full calculated load, or a managed subset with load-shedding equipment doing the arithmetic in real time.

Transfer switch choices, from interlock to ATS

  • Breaker interlock kit. The economical path for portable generators: a listed mechanical plate that physically prevents the main and the generator backfeed breaker from closing together. Legal when the kit is listed for your exact panel — universal “fits-most” plates are inspection failures waiting to happen.
  • Manual transfer switch. A dedicated switch feeding a critical-loads subpanel — furnace, well pump, refrigeration, some lighting. Predictable, serviceable, and the load list is decided once, calmly, instead of at 2 a.m. in an outage.
  • Automatic transfer switch (ATS). The standard companion to a permanently installed standby generator: it senses utility loss, signals the generator to start, transfers when voltage stabilizes, and transfers back when the utility returns. Whole-house ATS units pair with load-shedding modules so a 22kW generator can serve a 200A panel without being sized for every load at once.

Bonding: the detail that fails inspections

Every generator installation has to answer one question correctly: where is the neutral bonded to ground? A home’s service equipment already has the neutral-ground bond. If the generator also carries its own internal bond and the transfer switch does not switch the neutral, you have two bonds on one system — parallel neutral paths, nuisance GFCI trips, and current flowing where it should not. NEC 250.30 treats a generator with a switched neutral as a separately derived system with its own bonding and grounding-electrode requirements; a non-switched-neutral installation requires the generator’s internal bond to be lifted per the manufacturer’s instructions. Which configuration is right depends on the specific generator and switch — it is a five-minute decision for someone who does this weekly and a red tag for someone who does not.

Clean cutovers are planned, not improvised

The installation details that separate a clean cutover from a callback: generator placement respecting clearances from openings and gas meters (manufacturer listing and local code both speak here), fuel supply sized for the actual load — an undersized gas line starves the engine exactly when the whole neighborhood’s appliances restart at once — exercise schedules configured so the unit self-tests weekly, and surge protection at the panel, because generator power quality during transfer is rougher than utility power. We also label everything: a transfer switch a homeowner cannot operate confidently in the dark is half an installation. Ice-storm season across central Pennsylvania and the ridgelines is when this equipment earns its keep — and when unplanned installations get improvised badly.
